This album is
probably closer to his professional training than his excellent
Blue River outing which fuses Brazilian, contemporary and classical
music styles.Residing in Colorado Springs in the USA, Steve seems
to be influenced by his environment, his friends and the people
he communicates with. This is translated into his melodies, which
caress the listener as opposed to be musically force-fed."Moments
in Movement", as the name suggests, was in part inspired by
dance. The tempo, feel and subtlety of his playing are like a ballet
with a wonderful grace, progression and fluidity.
The nine tracks
on the CD take the listener on an unhurried journey of easy listening,
which is in fact, Steve's trademark. My favorite track on the CD
is haunting 'Among Other Things' which cascades on the eardrum like
a feather dancing in the wind.Composing original tracks with precise
content and quality has lead Steve to perform with various symphony
orchestras in the US and Europe, film scores and to write books
dedicated to the furtherment of musicians both young and old.His
book entitled 'The Source' has been widely acclaimed and endorsed
by industry icons such as Dave Brubeck, Lionel Hampton, Herbie Mann
and Clark Terry. His album 'Blue River' and killer cut 'Wish Upon
a Canvas' was and still is a favorite on that great US syndicate
show 'The Sounds of Brazil' presented by my friend Scott Adams
It is always
easier for the reader to evaluate an album review when likened to
another artist and recording. It is impossible to pigeon hole Steve
as the quality of his playing is certainly as proficient as any
of the great composers but in terms of Jazz artists, Steve may be
compared to Dave Grusin and his wonderful 'One of a Kind' set. I
know that Steve, like Dave, also composes soundtracks.'Moments in
Movement' is the ideal remedy to this hectic lifestyle in the twentieth
century. It is certain that Steve will compose some more tranquil
and soothing albums for us to enjoy as we approach a new millenium
which promises to be just as chaotic as the end of the previous
one. Everyone needs a copy of this CD to return to some sort of
sanity.Steve plays Steinway pianos and is provided with a concert
grand at any venue worldwide by this leading manufacturer.
